NAAIA Chicago History
In the summer of 2003, NAAIA Chicago made history by becoming the first chartered chapter of the National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA). Founded with a clear vision to increase the representation of African Americans in the insurance industry, NAAIA Chicago has since grown into a powerful force for positive change, offering its members unparalleled opportunities for career advancement, professional development, and community involvement. The chapter was officially awarded its charter on June 12, 2003, and incorporated later that December.
At the heart of its founding was Matt Cooper, a visionary leader and CEO of the Inner-City Group of Companies. As the first chapter president, Matt brought together a group of passionate and dedicated insurance professionals who shared a common goal: to open doors for African Americans in an industry where their presence was limited. His leadership set the stage for a chapter that would become a model of excellence in fostering growth, development, and mentorship within the insurance sector.
Building on this foundation, Margaret Redd, a long-tenured NAAIA member and eventual executive director of NAAIA National, succeeded Matt as chapter president. Under her guidance, the chapter’s programs expanded, and its influence grew. Following Margaret, leadership transitioned to Elliott Jones, a seasoned industry leader and retired Aon executive, who continued to strengthen the chapter’s initiatives. He was succeeded by Anthony Walker, Managing Director at Marsh and a future NAAIA National board member. Anthony’s tenure, the longest in the chapter’s history, spanned over five years, during which NAAIA Chicago reached new heights in membership and programming. In 2019, Mark Anderson, a regional underwriting officer at Travelers, assumed the presidency and successfully guided the chapter through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving a legacy of resilience and adaptability.

A Commitment to Community and Future Leaders
Beyond professional development, NAAIA Chicago has always prioritized giving back to the community. In 2006, the chapter launched its Annual Spring Benefit & Scholarship Luncheon, aimed at supporting local high school students. What began as a small initiative has blossomed into a hallmark event, providing nearly $175,000 in scholarships to date. These scholarships not only ease the financial burden for deserving students but also introduce them to the vast career opportunities within the insurance industry. The chapter’s signature scholarship is named in honor of the late Ron Allen, whose contributions to the chapter and the industry remain an enduring inspiration.
The success of NAAIA Chicago is a testament to the collective efforts of many individuals who have dedicated their time, energy, and expertise over the years. Leaders like Wayne Spooner, Thomas Crosby Sr., LaVelle Topps, Shirley Evans-Wofford, Penny Taylor-Parks, Bennie Jones, Bonnie Boone, and Roosevelt Haywood, among others, have played pivotal roles in shaping the chapter’s legacy. Their contributions, along with those of countless members and board directors, have ensured that NAAIA Chicago remains a beacon of hope and opportunity for Black professionals in the insurance industry.
Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future
NAAIA Chicago’s journey is far from over. With nearly two decades of impactful work behind it, the chapter continues to strive toward its mission of facilitating growth, empowerment, and career advancement for African American insurance professionals. Recognized by the national organization in 2007 with the first-ever Outstanding Chapter of the Year Award, NAAIA Chicago remains steadfast in its commitment to excellence. Through innovative programs, strategic partnerships, and an unwavering dedication to its members, the chapter is not only shaping careers but also inspiring the next generation of leaders in the insurance industry.
As we look ahead, NAAIA Chicago invites professionals and corporate partners to join its mission. Together, we can create a more diverse, inclusive, and dynamic insurance industry—one that truly reflects the world we live in and offers equitable opportunities for all.
